Mid-term in the Guildford Table Tennis League saw one of the outstanding matches of the season between Merrow A and B in the Premier Division. Superb table craft was shown throughout the evening at the Merrow Village club. The undoubted highlight was a thrilling counter hitting affair between John Robinson and Richard Seymour won in five sets by Robinson who went on to win all his singles  Those present remarked that it was probably one of the finest games ever played in the Associations history. The high standard continued with Andy Appleby gaining a very credible victory over Jason Tendler and Martin Townshend getting a pair. The doubles produced a real surprise with Graham Faulkner- who for once lost all his singles -and Seymour taking revenge with a three set win over Robinson and Tendler 9,1and 12. The A’s retained bragging rights with a 6-4 win at evenings end.

This week saw the inauguration of a Guildford  Junior Table Tennis League organised by the Associations  Coaching Scheme;

There are six teams competing – AKA, EVO, Farnborough, J², Spin Wizards and Team Vincent. Two matches were played this week: AKA vs J² and Farnborough vs Spin Wizards.

      In the match between AKA and J², James Scott of J² won twice vs Katie Snelson and then  vs Anay Gandhi, against whom he came back from 2-0 down. Both Anay and Katie defeated Jos Beedie to make it 2-2 leading into the doubles. However, AKA brought out their trump card, Anay’s older brother Adit – to partner Katie and defeat James and Jos 3-0. The final score was 3-2 to AKA.

      In the other match between Farnborough and Spin Wizards, Max Flint was dominant for the Wizards with a pair of 3-0 victories against Miguel Lopes and Joe Sparkes. Owain Osmond-Gillam added another win for the Spin Wizards against Joe but lost 3-1 to Miguel. In the doubles, Owain and Max won the first two games 11-9 11-9, but Joe and Miguel brilliantly fought back to take the next three to win the doubles 3-2. Final score: 3-2 to the Spin Wizards.

Back to League action and in the Third Division Godalming J and L played out a finely balanced draw with nobody pointless-an unusual occurrence!
